The Power of SAP BTP for Integration

If your organization runs on SAP, you know it’s mission-critical. SAP BTP’s Integration Suite is SAP’s dedicated platform to connect SAP to anything – it comes with pre-built connectors for SAP modules (and many non-SAP apps), plus tools for API management, workflow, and data streams. Using SAP BTP for integration means you’re aligning with SAP’s best practices: you get out-of-the-box knowledge of SAP data structures, updates that stay compatible with SAP releases, and cloud scalability via SAP’s infrastructure.

In simpler terms, SAP BTP lets you extend and integrate SAP without heavy custom coding in the SAP core. Instead of building bespoke point-to-point links that might break during SAP upgrades, you use SAP’s supported methods. This is especially powerful in a hybrid environment – e.g., connecting SAP S/4HANA on-premise with Salesforce in the cloud, or integrating SuccessFactors (SAP’s HR cloud) with your on-site Active Directory.

  • Integrating SAP & Non-SAP Systems: We use SAP Integration Suite (specifically Cloud Integration, formerly CPI) to create flows between SAP and external systems. For instance, connecting SAP ERP with a non-SAP CRM or e-commerce platform. Because Integration Suite comes with adapters for SAP (like IDoc, ALE, RFC) and for common protocols (REST, SOAP, OData), we can build interfaces that transform and route data from SAP’s format to the other system’s format. IGT configures these integration flows so that, say, a new customer in SAP automatically creates a customer in Salesforce, or an order in your website generates an IDoc into SAP for fulfillment. All of this happens securely and in near real-time, ensuring your SAP “single source of truth” stays in sync with everything else.
  • Cloud Extensions via SAP BTP: Many companies are extending their SAP capabilities with cloud services – SAP BTP is ideal for that. This covers Delivery & Warehouse integration – for example, automatically pushing shipping tracking numbers from SAP to a customer-facing app, or pulling delivery confirmations into SAP.
  • Analytics & Data Lakes: You might be consolidating data from SAP and other sources into a data lake or warehouse (like Snowflake or BigQuery). SAP BTP’s data integration can help extract data from SAP in near real-time (using OData services or events) to feed your analytics. So for Reports & Data, instead of nightly batch dumps, we can set up a continuous feed of key data changes from SAP to your BI platform, giving you up-to-date insights.

SAP’s strategy is evolving toward the cloud-based Integration Suite on BTP, but SAP PI/PO (now part of what they call SAP Process Orchestration) is the older on-prem middleware many are running. They share similar goals – integrating SAP systems – but BTP offers more modern capabilities (cloud integration flows, API management, event mesh, etc.). You don’t necessarily need to switch immediately if PI/PO is working for you. We at IGT can work with your existing PI/PO setup and even integrate it with new cloud services if needed. However, SAP has signaled that the cloud Integration Suite is the future. We often help clients gradually transition: for example, keep critical interfaces on PI/PO for now, but build new integrations on BTP. We can even reuse some logic. In summary, we support both and can guide you on when it might be beneficial to move to BTP Integration Suite (like if you want to integrate many cloud applications, that’s where BTP shines).

Yes, using SAP Integration Suite requires licensing from SAP. The licensing model can be either capacity-based (number of connections or messages) or now they have a CPEA (cloud platform enterprise agreement) which is more like credits. If you’re an existing SAP customer, sometimes Integration Suite is included in certain packages or available at a discount. We’re not a reseller, but we can help you understand what license scope you need based on our integration design (for instance, how many messages per month you might have). We often work alongside SAP account managers – we focus on the technical plan, and SAP handles the licensing sale. Rest assured, we design solutions mindful of cost: e.g., we’ll avoid inefficient polling interfaces that could drive up message counts unnecessarily. We aim for a cost-effective architecture within SAP’s licensing framework.

In all likelihood, yes. SAP’s integration tools are quite flexible. We might use an existing connector or create a custom integration. For example, if you have a proprietary legacy system, we can integrate via database-level connections or flat file exchanges orchestrated by SAP BTP. If the system has an API, even better – we’ll connect via API. We haven’t yet met a system we couldn’t integrate with SAP in one way or another. In one project, we connected SAP with a decades-old mainframe application by having SAP BTP pick up and drop off files in a secure FTP – not glamorous, but it worked reliably. Ideally, though, we use more modern methods like APIs or message queues. When you bring us a system, our first step is to analyze what integration points it offers (APIs, events, DB access) and then we design the bridge from SAP to that system. So far, we’ve tackled integrations with everything from cutting-edge SaaS apps to old IBM AS/400 systems. So yes – try us!

Great question – data mapping is often the most important part of integration, especially with SAP where field structures can be complex (material numbers, customer IDs, etc.). We typically start by defining a mapping specification: for each field in source, what’s the corresponding field in target, and any transformation (like date formats, code conversions) needed. In SAP BTP Integration Suite, we implement these via the mapping step in integration flows (graphical or code-based mappings). For example, mapping an external REST JSON to an SAP IDoc format – we specify how JSON fields map to IDoc segments. Our team is very familiar with common SAP data structures (IDocs, BAPIs, OData entities), so we handle a lot of this from experience. We test mappings thoroughly with sample data to ensure, say, an “Order” from System A correctly becomes a “SalesOrderCreate” IDoc into SAP with all fields correct. Additionally, we consider master data differences – e.g., if country codes are “USA” in one system but “US” in SAP, we’ll include a conversion in the map. We often collaborate with your functional SAP team for this, because they know what values SAP expects. Once the integration is live, if any data fails (like a code was unmapped), we adjust the mapping rules. Over time, these mappings become stable and just work in the background. So, in short: we take mapping seriously, document it, implement it in BTP, and test thoroughly to make sure data translates accurately between systems.

It does mean your integration layer is within SAP’s ecosystem, yes, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing if you’re already an SAP-centric shop. The advantage is tighter integration with your SAP products and one throat to choke (SAP) if something at the platform level goes wrong. SAP Integration Suite is built to integrate non-SAP too, so it’s not like it only works with SAP systems – you can connect to anything. If vendor lock-in is a concern, remember that any integration platform (MuleSoft, Dell Boomi, etc.) has some lock-in. The mappings and flows you build are specific to that tool. The good news with SAP’s tool is if you’re committed to SAP as a company, you’re likely to keep it for the long run. But if in the future someone decided to switch to another platform, the concepts used (API calls, data mappings) would carry over, you’d just reimplement them in the new tool. We generally advise clients to choose the integration platform that best aligns with their primary systems – in your case, that’s SAP – so using SAP’s own integration suite often maximizes compatibility and minimizes headaches. And since you likely already have an SAP relationship, it’s one less vendor. We’re happy to discuss the pros/cons more in detail, but in our experience, SAP Integration Suite has been a solid choice for SAP-heavy environments, and not a decision folks regret.
